What is the 11+ exam?
The 11 plus (11+) is a selective entrance exam taken by children in Year 5 and Year 6 across England, used by grammar schools and many independent schools to award places. Depending on your region, it is set in either GL Assessment or CEM style and typically tests four areas:
- ✏️ Verbal Reasoning — synonyms, antonyms, analogies, letter codes and sequences.
- 🧩 Non-Verbal Reasoning — shapes, patterns and spatial puzzles.
- ➗ Maths — arithmetic, fractions, time, and problem solving at KS2 level and beyond.
- 📖 English — comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary.
The key to success is little and often: short, regular practice sessions build speed and confidence far more effectively than last-minute cramming.

“Rapid” means happening very fast, so the closest match is “quick”. The other words describe sound, weight and time — not speed.
- Verbal Reasoning · Antonyms2. Which word is most OPPOSITE in meaning to ANCIENT?Answer: Modern
“Ancient” means very old, so its opposite is “modern” (new). “Historic” and “elderly” are related to age, but they are not opposites.

Rose, tulip and daisy are all flowers. “Salmon” is a fish, so it does not belong to the group.

A puppy is a young dog, so the link is “young animal → adult animal”. A kitten is a young cat.
- Verbal Reasoning · Letter Codes6. If CAT is written in code as DBU, what is the code for DOG?Answer: EPH
Each letter moves forward by one (C→D, A→B, T→U). Apply the same shift to DOG: D→E, O→P, G→H, giving EPH.
- Maths · Fractions7. What is ¾ of 48?Answer: 36
Divide 48 by 4 to get one quarter (12), then multiply by 3: 12 × 3 = 36.
- Maths · Time8. A train leaves at 14:35 and arrives at 16:10. How long is the journey?Answer: 1 h 35 min
From 14:35 to 15:35 is 1 hour; from 15:35 to 16:10 is another 35 minutes. Total: 1 hour 35 minutes.
